John W. Conklin was born in Ohio around 1848. The 1850 census lists his age as 2 years. He moved with his parents to Kansas by 1870 and in 1880 was living with his uncle Elijah’s family in Jefferson County, Kansas. He is named in the 1883 probate records of his grandfather, Joseph Cory Conkling. The 1885 Kansas state census shows John living in Jefferson County, Kansas. He reported his occupation in 1885 as farmer, but may have been a hired hand as there is no record of a land purchase by John in that county. John had spent some time in California as the 1885 census says that he moved to Kansas from there. No certain record is found of John after this. The cemetery where his grandfather is buried in Topeka (Rochester Cemetery) records the burial of John Conklin “age 47 y. 6m. 14 da.” who died on 27 November 1892.

John married "Mattie" Martha on 14 Oct 1873 in Chatauqua, Kansas. Martha and John are listed on the 1875 Kansas state census. They lived in Howard, ELk County, Kansas.
