It has long been thought by Magill researchers that Samuel Magill's wife Martha Shannon was a biological Shannon. However,I have found information in several books on Rockingham County, Virginia indicating that this is not correct. According to the VIRGINIA HISTORIC MARRIAGE REGISTER, ROCKINGHAM COUNTY MARRIAGES, 1778-1850: "Samuel Magill and Martha Shannon, widow of Joseph Shannon were married 4 Nov. 1782." In this record Wm. Magill is listed as bondsman.
CHRONICLES OF THE SCOT-IRISH SETTLEMENT IN VIRGINIA, VOLUME II: March 25, 1782 "James Shannon's estate committed to widow Martha." There are various other records therein.
OLD TENTH LEGION MARRIAGES IN ROCKINGHAM COUNTY,VIRGINIA FROM 1778 TO 1816: " Samuel Magil[sic] and Martha Shannon, wd. of Joe. ded., Wm Magill bondsman."
ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA MINUTE BOOK, 1778-1792, PART 1 1778-1786: Page 116 [25 March 1782]" Adminstration of the estate of James Shannon, deceased, is granted to Martha Shannon, widow, she having made oath and etc." List bonds for the estate made by John Magill and James Magill as well as others.
SAME BOOK: Page 371 [24 August 1784] "Samuel Magill came into court with security entered into and acknowledged their bond according to law as guardian for Jean, Darcas and Margaret Shannon, orphans of James Shannon, deceased. The same is admitted to record. Ordered that Capt. Wm. Herring be appointed a guardian for Wm. Shannon, orphan of James Shannon, deceased etc."
I have a copy of the original marriage record and it appears to me that Martha Shannon's first husband was James Shannon and not Joseph Shannon.

I am a descendant of William McGill of Rockingham Co., VA b. @@ 1670 in Scotland and immigrated from Ireland, d. 10/1749 Augusta Co., VA, Will probated 11/11/1749 Augusta Co., VA. believed to have married twice: 1st to a Mary Eakin and second to Marget Gass (widow) who had a son David Gass by her first husband. William's children by his first wife were: James MaGill, William MaGill Jr., John and Elizabeth. My line is through William Jr, b. ! 1715 near Belfast, Ireland. d. 10/28/1806 Green Co., TN; m. to Jean/Jane Fowler @@ 1755 Rockingham Co., VA; children: Samuel MaGill, William, James, Robert, John, Hugh, Charles and Elizabeth. Samuel MaGill is my line b. @@ 1757 Augusta Co., VA, d. 1809 Green Co., TN, Meadow Creek; Will p.23/1809; m. Martha Reid/Reed Shannon 11/4/1782 (I learned this maiden name from Ann K. King Tebow who has a copy of the original marriage record and it appears that Martha's first husband was James/Joseph Shannon). Info for this is in the VA Minute Book.,1778-1792, etc. Same book shows Samuel Magill became guardian for Jean, Darcas and Margaret Shannon, orphans of James Shannon, deceased and a Capt. Wm. Herring was appointed guardian for Wm. Shannon, orphan of James Shannon deceased. Children of Samuel Magill and Martha Reid/Reed Shannon: Margaret Shannon Magill, Jean Shannon Magill, Elizabeth Shannon (Eliza) Magill, Robert, Agnes, Mary, Matthew. My line goes through Elizabeth Shannon Magill (Eliza) b. 1794 Green Co., TN Meadow Creek, d. 1870 Walker Co., GA m. Elliott/Ellet Murdock 12/6/1821 Greene Co., GA. My line is through Ellet Murdock and Elizabeth Shannon Magill. Their children: William Hamilton, Elizabeth B., Patsy, John Tennessee, J. Carol, Mary A., Daniel Jasper, Elliott Francis Magill Murdock, Thomas and Martha. Daniel Jasper Murdock was my great grandfather. I have a supplemental membership in DAR through the Magill line. My father, Alvin Murdock, researched this line.
