  14. Biography by Norman Kaye:
    Margaret Mattie Stuve
Mattie, as she was called, was born in 1858 on the Stuve farm in the Norwegian township of Valders. This is, evidently, near Oslo, which was called Christiania in those days. She was one of eight children. The other Stuve children were Martin, Louis, Hans, Edward, Hattie, Gilbert and John. A number of these children migrated to Wisconsin where they owned and operated farms around Humbird and Hayfield, Wisconsin. [should be "Humbird and Northfield"]. Mattie lived in Northfield, Wisconsin, and on Nov. 30 1882 married Gustav Adolf Gilbertson of Garfield, Wisconsin.
They moved to St. Paul, Minnesota and had two children, Roy who died at about 12 years of age, and Hazel.. Mattie and her husband lived with their daughter, Hazel, and helped care for Hazel's four boys. After Mattie's husband became blind, she sold ladies' foundation garments (corsets) door to door.
Mattie spent some summers with her oldest grandson, Norman, visiting relatives' farms in Wisconsin. She also spent many summers "roughing it" with her two oldest grandsons, Dora Zwetch Kaye and two of her grandson's female cousins at a Round Lake cabin north of Brainard, Minnesota. "Roughing it" meant out-door plumbing, pumping water by hand and a one-mile canoe ride to buy more milk and kerosene.
Mattie was short and slender. Even in her 90's, she could touch the palms of her hands to the ground without bending her knees. In her later years, she developed a skin cancer on her face which she treated with a homemade salve.
She died in 1953 at the age of 95 and is buried in Acasia Park Cemetery south of St. Paul, Minnesota.
  15. Location of Acacia Park Cemetery: 2151 Pilot Knob Road, Mendota Heights, MN (found on Google Maps website).
