Facts and Events
Biography by Norman Kaye: Hazel May Gilbertson Hazel was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on Oct. 29, 1890. She had a younger brother, Roy, who died at about age 12 following an appendectomy at St. John's Hospital. Roy is buried in Roselawn Cemetery (?), St. Paul. A number of other siblings are believed to have died at birth. Hazel was raised on the east side of St. Paul and graduated from a high school in that area. She worked at the West Publishing Co. for a short while where she met and married Harry Kaye. She gave birth to four boys, Norman, Warren, Roger and Richard. Her interests and activities were largely related to her duties as a home maker. During her early married life, she painted and glazed chinaware as a hobby. Some of this work bears her name and was handed down to her children. Hazel's parents, Mattie and Gustof, lived with her and her husband for the remainder of their lives but had a slightly separated living unit. She and other family members are buried at Acacia Park Cemetery, south of St. Paul. References
