  28. Norwegian surnames are derived from the farm name, and immigrants often took the name of the larger, more well-known farm. Stuve was first established in 1616 and divided into two equal portions in 1836 (Stuve upper and Stuve lower). Stuve also had farm dwellings or cotter farms under or separate from Stuve. Halden (aka Halla or Stuvehalla), which Hovel owned, was one of these. It was never a cotter farm but became established as a small separate farm, once a part of the larger Stuve farm.
  29. He purchased the farm from his father in 1855. Halla (Stuvehalla) was a farm under the much larger farm called Stuve but was never a cotter farm. Halla was often written "Halden" in olden times, according to the bygdebook. My grandmother, Carrie Vesta Stuve, said that the family's surname was Halden in Norway, but they took the Stuve name after immigrating. Hovel sold the farm to his brother, Lars Larsen, in 1877, who in turn sold it in 1887 to his son (Hovel's nephew) also named Lars Larsen. In the 1865 Norwegian census, the farm name is shown as Holden.

Details of Homestead File: Application # 8237 was made at the Land Office at LaCrosse, Wisconsin on 3 May 1881 by Hovel L. Stuve for S½ of SW¼ of Sec. 6 in T23 of R6W. The Application, as well as a Homestead Affidavit, is signed by Hovel. A Receiver's Receipt, also dated the same day, is for the amount of the entry fee of $12.00 and ¼ cents.
On 28 Oct 1887, Hovel L. Stuve of York - Jackson County, Wisconsin appeared at the LaCrosse Land Office to give notice of his intention to make final proof to establish his claim on 20 Dec 1887 before the Clerk of Ceircuit Court for Jackson County at Black River Falls, Wisconsin. He named four neighbors as potential witnesses, Ole O. Eimoen, Iver O. Eimoen, Martin G. Lewis and Martin Thomly. Hovel's signature appears on the document. Accordingly, notice was published for 6 successive weeks in the Whitehall Times, a weekly newspaper published in Whitehall, Wisconsin. The notice was first published on the 3rd of November, and the last publication was on 8 Dec 1887.
A Certificate of Naturalization, dated 12 Dec 1887, at Circuit Court, Whitehall, Wisconsin states that Hovel L. Stuve, a native of Norway, had appeared in the same Court on 29 Oct 1877 and had declared on oath his intention to become a citizen of the USA, renouncing all allegiance to Oscar 2nd King of Norway and Sweden. Testifiying for him were Ole O. Eimoen and O.E. Goplin.
On 20 Dec 1887, Hovel appeared in Court to prove his claim. He signed a Final Affidavit Required of Homestead Claimants. He and his two witnesses, Iver O. Eimoen and Martin G. Lewis, testified. In his testimony, Hovel stated that he was a farmer, 67 years old with a post office address of York, Jackson County, Wisconsin, and was a naturalized citizen. He described the land as ordinary agricultural land of clay soil, rough and rolling, not timber land and not grazing land. He first settled on the land in October 1881. He cleared a little land and built a house. The improvements were then worth $100. He began living there permanently at the end of October 1881 and had lived there ever since with his wife and 8 children. He described all improvements and their value: a frame house 16X16 feet, $75; a frame and underground stable 25X10 feet, $40; frame stable 10X16 feet, $25; a frame granary 10X8 feet, $10; 5 acres broke and 120 rods fence, and 2 acres cleared, $100; a very good orchard; Improvements worth about $250. He described his farm implements as wagons, harrow, rakes, forks, hoes, shovels, which he had owned from 6 months to 6 years. He also had 5 cows, 1 yoke oxen, 1 yoke steers, 8 head young cattle, 2 cats, 8 sheep and 2 hogs; Household furnishings: 1 stove , 1 table, 6 chairs, 3 beds & steads dishes and books, which he had had from 1 to 6 years. He had raised wheat, potatoes, hay and vegetables for six seasons. He had 3½ to 5 acres in crops each year, with an average crop about 50 bushels of wheat and 3 tons of hay. He testified that he had paid taxes in the township since 1881.
His signature appears at the end of his testimony. Martin Lewis further testified that the land was rough and broken and had a small creek and a few springs. He had seen Hovel on the land on an average of about 10 times a year at different times and had last seen him there just the day before. He stated, "Whenever I have been there, he was working his plow, well as he could."
A Final Receiver's Receipt was dated 22 Dec 1887 for $2, which was the balance of payment for the land entry. An additional note at the bottom states, "Received for examination of final proof $2.18." Final Certificate No. 5488 was issued on 22 Dec 1887, which entitled Hovel to a Patent for the tract of land. It was Patented 6 Jul 1889; Recorded, Vol. 11, page 475; Land Office, La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Homestead Certificate No. 5488 signed 6 Jul 1889 by President Benjamin Harrison can be found on the National Archives website.
