Margaret Scott was born on 31st August 1896 at Otterburn in the parish of Morebattle, Roxburghshire. She was the daughter of Jane Scott, formerly Robson, and her husband William Scott, a gardener. The 1901 census finds Margaret living with her parents and three older sisters at Otterburn in a house with two rooms with windows. Ten years later Margaret and her parents were still at Otterburn, but her sisters had all left home.
Margaret had a daughter in 1922 in Edinburgh. Her daughter was married in Edinburgh in 1944, after which she appears to have moved to Bury in Lancashire.
Margaret herself did not marry until 1946, when she was about fifty years old. Her husband was a widower named John Colling, who worked as an electrician. He had lived for some years at 120 Pleasance in Edinburgh, and they continued to live there after their marriage. Margaret and John were married for about six years until his death in 1952. Margaret survived him by seven years. She died on 20th August 1960 at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. Her last residence was 120 Pleasance, showing she had carried on living there after John's death. She was 63 years old. Her daughter was the informant for her death.
