Childhood

Jane Robson was born on 1st June 1859 at Crookham in the parish of Ford, Northumberland. She was the daughter of Jane Robson, formerly Patterson, and her husband William Robson, a carter. Young Jane spent her childhood and early adulthood living at Crookham with her parents and siblings. Her father had been married before, with there being a number of half-siblings from his first marriage.

Each census from1861 to 1881 finds Jane living in Crookham with her parents. By 1881 she was working as a general domestic servant.

Adulthood

On 11th March 1891, aged 31, Jane married William Scott, a 36 year old gardener, at the parish church in Coldstream, Berwickshire. He was from Ladykirk in Berwickshire, not too far from either Coldstream or Ford, although he travelled all over Scotland working as a gardener on big estates. At the time of their marriage he was working at the opposite side of Scotland in the north-western coastal town of Oban.

After their marriage, Jane and William lived initially in Oban, where their first daughter, Mary Jane, was born in 1892. They subsequently moved to Kelso, Roxburghshire, in the south-east of Scotland, where they had twins, Elizabeth and Hannah, in 1895. Shortly after that, they moved to the Otterburn Estate in the parish of Morebattle, Roxburghshire, where their daughter Margaret was born in 1896. Meanwhile, Jane’s father Walter died at Crookham in 1892.

Jane and William stayed at Morebattle for several years, from at least 1896 until after 1915. Jane’s widowed mother came to live with them, dying at Morebattle in 1902. Jane and William reported to the 1911 census that they had had six children, although only four were still living. The identities of the two who had died have yet to be established.

Jane and William made one final significant move, moving over 80 miles north-west from Morebattle to Blairingone in Kinross-shire sometime between 1915 and 1921, where they lived in a house called Rosebank. They later moved to the nearby town of Dollar in Clackmannanshire, where they lived at Myrtle Cottage, 2 Argyll Street.

Jane’s first grandchild was born in 1922, being her daughter Margaret’s daughter. Another granddaughter followed in 1925, being her daughter Hannah’s daughter.

Jane only lived a few months after her second granddaughter’s birth. She died on 5th February 1926 at Myrtle Cottage. She was 66 years old. William survived her by fourteen years, dying in the same house in 1940, aged 84.
