Mary Jane Scott was born on 10th March 1892 at Oban in Argyll, daughter of Jane Scott, formerly Robson, and her husband William Scott, a gardener. The family moved to Roxburghshire when Mary was young, living in Kelso by 1895, before settling at Otterburn Lodge in Morebattle by 1896. Mary appears there in the 1901 census with her parents and three younger sisters. Her parents were still there in 1911, but Mary appears to have left home by this point.

Mary's parents moved again some time between 1915 and 1925, settling at Dollar in Clackmannanshire. Mary's mother died there in 1926. Later that year, aged 34, Mary was married in Edinburgh to a telegraph storekeeper named Peter Walton. At the time of their marriage Mary was working as a restaurant assistant and living at 19 Comely Green Crescent in Edinburgh. Mary and Peter went on to have one daughter together, who would go on to marry and have children in Mary's lifetime. Mary's father died in 1940.

Peter died in 1958. Mary survived him by about two years. She died on 1st June 1960, aged 68, at Rosslynlee, a large hospital in the parish of Lasswade, Midlothian, to the south of Edinburgh.
