John Colling (or Collning) was born on 4th August 1881 at 12 Fifth Street Terrace in Edinburgh, son of Joan Colling, formerly McDonald, and her husband William Colling, a city porter. John appears in the 1891 census living with his parents and siblings at 15 Borthwicks Close in Edinburgh.

On 27th August 1906, aged 25, John married Jane Robertson McMillan in Edinburgh. They appear to have had at least one child who survived them. At the time of their marriage John was described as a light porter, but he later became an electrician. Jane died in 1938, aged 49. They had been married for nearly 32 years. At the time of her death their residence was given as 120 Pleasance.

Eight years later, in 1946, John married again, with his second wife being Margaret Scott. John and Margaret were married for about six years. John died on 17th December 1952 at 120 Pleasance in Edinburgh. He was 71 years old. His son was the informant for his death. Margaret survived him by seven years.
