Jane Robertson McMillan was born on 23rd January 1889 at 42C Buccleuch Street in Edinburgh, daughter of Jane McMillan, formerly Robertson, and her husband William McMillan, a pastry baker. Young Jane appears in the 1891 census living at 42C Buccleuch Street with her parents and siblings. By 1901 the family had moved to 26 Corporation Buildings at 168 Cowgate.

Jane was married on 27th August 1906, aged 17, to a porter (later electrician) named John Colling. They appear to have had at least one child who survived them.

Jane died on 4th May 1938, at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh. She was 49. Her last residence was 120 Pleasance in Edinburgh. John survived her by fourteen years.
