By 1900, 8 children had been born, 8 were alive; 1910, 10 children had been born and were alive. Her husband's military record and the Biographical History of Northern Michigan B.F. Bowen & Co.,1905, pp 304-306, state that a child died in infancy. Interesting in 1910 she is listed as a farm laborer (as was her sister-in-law, Minnie). 1930 she is widow with a dairy farm, son and grandson, Carl, and one 12 yr old boarder, Dilbert Kenny, are with her. They always had room for extra people and took in lots of children through the years. She took in Perry, Louis, Alex, and Dorothy Hosler. She also fed fawns in her kitchen She was a midwife and is written about in Michigan History, September/October 1989, 'Michigan Midwives' by Paula Stofer, pg 41-43. She raised many flowers and vegetables, and made many quilts, dresses, shirts and trousers. Minnie Mae Hosler borrowed her sewing machine sometimes. Obituary WAS RESIDENT OF ECHO TOWNSHIP SINCE 1869 Margaret Ann Murphy passed away at her home in Echo township, at midnight, Thursday Feb'y 2nd, at the age of 72 years, ten months and four days. She was born March 29, 1860, in New York State, and came to Michigan at the age of nine years, residing in Echo township until her death. On Sept. 25, 1876, she was united in marriage to John W. Murphy, who passed away in 1925. She leaves to mourn their loss, ten sons and daughters, viz: Mary Ann Spence of Ridgetown Canada; Ralph of East Jordan; William of Echo; Hattie Towsley of Charlevoix; May Kidder of Echo; Ervin of East Jordan; Belle Sweet and Raymond of Echo. Also two brothers, Henry Hosler of Central Lake and Joseph Hosler of Echo. And 24 grand children and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Murphy was a faithful member in the church.
