1910, 1920 he may have been in Flat Head County Montana. 1930 he is alone living next to his mother and is a general farmer.

Maurice Murphy said Bill accidentally shot Linn Gilbert while hunting in 1940-41. Bill left the area and no one knew where he went. After his death, his nephew, Maurice Murphy, traced him, through Social Security, to Manistique, Michigan. He went there and interviewed the people on whose property Bill lived. They told him Bill worked in a fire tower in Montana and married in Montana (?) 1920's.
