Grace Hopper states he was born 4 years after they came to Michigan (1872). She also says he died at age 5 (1879) of diphtheria at a time when eight neighborhood children also died of diphtheria. A search of the Antrim County death records shows that eight children in Banks Twp died of diptheria in October 1879. His death is not in the 1880 mortality census.
