Facts and Events
Margaret married James MCNAIR of Greenfield in Edinburgh, Midlothian, 7sep1777 (IGI) or 12sep1777 (according to Frances Eleanor McNair’s copy of a copy from the McNair family bible made by Mrs. Margaret Barton Kinnear nee McNair. The bible was presumably in the possession of Robert McNair (b. 1827) at one time. Margaret's Trust disposition and Settlement (11pages) and Inventory (3 pages), dated 1835, describing her as widow of James, is in Scottish Archives, as is a will, registered on 11dec1829 of James MCNAIR residing at Greenfield (5 pages). The National Archives, Kew, Surrey, England, have the will of “Margaret Barton or McNair, widow, Greenfield, Lanarkshire, dated 16Jun1835” (5 pages). Some of the beneficiaries of the latter will are, to quote: Daughter, widow of John Black esq. late of Claremonnt, merchant in Glasgow, Janet Ann McNair our youngest daughter, Major James McNair (and his son James McNair) and Doctor Benjamin McNair, our sons, William Logie our grandson, eldest son of the marriage between Captain William Logie now residing at Nairne (?) and Mrs. Mary McNair our daughter, the sisters (of William) Margaret and Mary, Janet Scott, Jane Scott, Elizabeth Scott, Mary Scott and James Scott, daughters and son of Joseph (?) Scott esq. merchant in Glasgow and Mrs, Jane McNair, now deceased, our daughter. James MCNAIR was a Glasgow coalmaster and mined on his property adjoining Greenfield House, Shettleston, Lanarkshire. His mine “Auld Prickly” was finally lost by flooding (information-B. Larsen). James bought the lands and Manor House of Greenfield from Isabel Luke, wife of Robert Bogle, daughter of Robert Luke, a Glasgow goldsmith, in 1759 and in 1762 Shettleston House from Robert Bogle, merchant in Glasgow. Shettleston House was built in 1703 and demolished in 1929. The information about Margaret's children comes from Frances Eleanor McNair’s copy of a copy from the McNair family bible made by Mrs. Margaret Barton Kinnear nee McNair. Margaret had an account at the bank of Thomas Coutt’s in London, as is evident from a letter dated 12apr1811 from them to James McNair, Greenfield, referring to his son, Leut McNair, and the 52nd Regiment (genforum).
