Facts and Events
Philip BARTON was born 23 May 1751 (IGI, vital records) registered in Newbattle, Midlothian and died 1808 in London (family bible). He was a saddler in London and apparently inherited Clinker/Clincart, Cathcart, Lanarkshire. In the 11th century or later, a Barton or de Barton, married a lady called de Peltier, who came to England from Normandy; Philip related in a letter meeting a count, emigrated from France to London, who was a descendant of that de Peltier. Unfortunately this knowledge of the past family history was largely lost in about 1840 (information from N. George). Alexander BARTON (1786-1864) wrote to his father from London on 19mar1808 with the news that his uncle Philip „was no more“. There are files in National Archives (Q/STB/095 to 099) which are Receipts from Philip Barton, 406 Strand, saddler and harness maker (dated 1792 - 1798). The will and codicil of Philip Barton, sadler, Strand, parish of St. Martins in the ffields , Middlesex, was signed 5mar1808 and proved 6apr1808. Beneficiaries were: brother Benjamin Barton, his children by 1st marriage: Alexander (50 pounds), Sarah and Margaret; children by 2nd marriage: Philip (500 pounds); sister Margaret McNair, brother in law James McNair and their children: Philip Barton McNair, James McNair the younger (50 pounds), Benjamin McNair (online document PROB 11/1477, National archives).
