Facts and Events
Philip BARTON was born 18 Mar 1715 (family letters) and baptised 27 MAR 1715 at Doncaster St. George (P1/1/A2, Doncaster Archives). Philip probably emigrated to Scotland with his father. He owned a tenement in the High St. of Dalkeith, Midlothian but settled at Burnfoot (E of Dalkeith) (family letters). A contemporary map shows both the tenement (with owner‘s name) and Burnfoot. Philip was described as a merchant in the marriage record of his daughter Margaret (“McNair, McNear, and McNeir genealogies”, compiled by James Birtley McNair). Philip married 22 Oct 1741 (family bible) Margaret STEVENSON, daughter of the late John STEVENSON, commissary clerk of Glasgow, and Margaret BAIRD. The will of John STEVENSON, commissary clerk of Glasgow, dated 1730, is in Scottish Archives. Margaret had a brother, Alexander STEVENSON, commissary clerk, owner of the property Clinker (or Clincart), Cathcart, Lanarkshire, who died 16 apr 1783 (family bible). Margaret Stevenson died possibly 2 Jan 1795 (family letters) though more likely 12 May 1792 (family bible). Philip died 4 mar 1787, aged 72 years, at Greenfield House (family bible), Shettleston, E of central Glasgow, the home of Margaret MCNAIR nee BARTON. References
