She graduated from Story City High School in 1906 and received the St. Olaf scholarship. She attended St. Olaf College, 1910-12 and was a member of the St. Olaf choir. She was housekeeper for her father from 1907-13 except while at college. She was secretary of the Women's Missionary Federation, Eau Claire Circuit, 1925-6 and president of Ladies Aid, Stanley, Wis. 1928-29. She organized and directed the Children's Choir of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Stanley, Wisconsin. Starting from scratch in a small town which never had more than one vocal music teacher for the whole school system, Lula taught her recruits to sing two- and three-part music, mostly a cappella, using Malmin books. We learned to avoid flatting, how to move from one note to another without sliding: In "In Dulce Jubilo" the last word in "Thou, my Savior Art" went from F up to C. She could get children to sing that word without sliding or jerking or using a harsh "r" sound. When the choir was first organized, she gathered mothers at our home, where they made "robes", cutting squares from bolts of white sateen, stiching tape around the neck opennings, sewing snaps into place. Every summer, she brought all the robes home to wash, iron and repair them. By the time she was able to turn the job over to someone else, the choir was an essential part of the congregation. What Lula was doing in Stanley and her sisters were doing in Story City, Iowa was part of their heritage from ancestors such as Margrete Naadland.
