Joseph Sjursen Marvig was confirmed 30 November 1873 in the Lisbon Church of P. A. Rasmussen. He received an elementary education at Nettle Creek, Ill., bought land and engaged in farming until 1892, when he moved to Story City, Iowa and purchased an interest in a general merchandise store, Cassem, Jensen and Marwick. In April 1895 he established Joseph Marwick & Co., the first store in Story City selling men and boys clothing exclusively. Three years later he sold his interest to John and Henry Donhowe and formed the North-Western Land and Trust Company. On August 2, 1989, the Story City National Bank opened with Joseph Marwick, president, and Henry and John Donhowe as officers. With brothers Sam and Andrew Marvick he formed the Iowa and Dakota Land and Loan Company in Sisseton, South Dakota and was part owner of the Citizens National Bank in that city. He was a member of the Story City School Board for eight years. In 1913 he helped fund the St. Olaf Choir trip to Norway. When Joseph went into business in Story City he spelled his name Marwick. He was the only member of the family to use Marwick. His father spelled his name Marvig, and his children and brothers, used Marvick.
