He attended the Morris Normal and Scientific School at Morris, Ill. He was supervisor for Nettle Creek township for eight years. He engaged in farming until December, 1902, when he moved to Morris, Ill. He was a real estate broker for forty years, chairman of the trustees of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Morris for twenty years and trustee of Home Missions Eastern District for three years.
