He attended Morris High School until his senior year, when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Station and was honorably discharged April 19, 1918. He graduated from Metropolitan Business College in Joliet, Illinois in 1919. Before WWII Silas was a salesman in Bloomington, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army (Signal Corps) in 1942. He was honorably discharged as a Major after serving at Army bases throughout the United States and north Africa. After the war he was a Division Sales Manager, Frigidaire Div., General Motors Corp., Chicago, Illinois.
