Research notes

• Likely named after ancient Greek heroes, King Leonidas and Lycurgus. Both were featured in the poem "The Shipwreck" by William Falconer, which many school children of the early 1800s had to memorize. As a result, the name "Leonidas Lycurgus" can be found in many of their offspring.

   DEATH CALLS “PA” PITMAN – Aged Citizen Succumbed Last Friday Funeral Sunday Afternoon – Leonidas Lycurgus Pitman was born September 14, 1834, at Milton, Ind., and departed this life April 21 [23, per county record], 1926, age 91 years, 7 months and 11 days. He was married to Martha Develin on September 7, 1857, and to this union were born eleven children, his wife and five children having preceded him in death, leaving to mourn his going his faithful daughters, Miss Emma Pitman of Cambridge City, Mrs. Della Williams of New Castle, Mrs. Jennie Laux and Mrs. Retta Weed of Indianapolis, Mrs. Alma Guerin of Connersville, and Mrs. Elizabeth Petro of Cambridge City, also twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-three great-grandchildren. Mr. Pitman, familiarly known as “Pa”, was a well known character, having been in the ice business for fifty three years. He was a charter member of Cambridge Lodge. No. 9, K. of P., Wayne Lodge No. 17, I.O.O.F., and Hormah Encampment No. 11. He was a good kind husband and father and a true friend, generous to a fault, and his cheerful presence will be missed by all. Funeral services Sunday afternoon at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Willard Petro in Cambridge City, Rev. F.C. McCormick officiating. Burial was at Riverside.
