10 Feb 1921 - DEATH COMES TO WARNER PITMAN AGED CITIZEN AND LONG RESIDENT HERE, DIES AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS BORN IN MILTON, IN ----- Sixty-second Wedding Anniversary Was Recently Observed - Widow And Six Children Survive. I. W. Pitman, age 88 years, a resident of New Castle for over 63 years, died this morning at 4 o'clock at his home on South Main St. Mr. Pitman had been in ill health for the past month and gradually became weaker until the end. Senility and a complication of diseases was given as the cause of his death. He was a wellknown and highly respected citizen and his death marks the first in the family for over 50 years. Warner Pitman, as he was familiarly known to his neighbors and friends, was born in Milton, IN, on June 20, 1832. He was the son of Eli and Hannah Pitman, his father being a native of North Carolina and his mother of Pennsylvania, when 19 years old Mr. Pitman went to California and the western coast returning to Indiana in 1856. At the age of 25 years, he came to New Castle and had been a continuous resident, living here for over 63 years. On the 13th day of December, 1858, he was married to Rebecca Carpenter, and his death thus breaks a tie of over 62 years. Mr. and Mrs. Pitman celebrated their 62 wedding anniversary last December. His death is the first in the family for more than 50 years.
IN BUSINESS LONG TIME When Mr. Pitman first came here he manufactured pumps and engaged in different lines of business. He sold agricultural implements and in 1876 became the manager of the Baldwin, Roberts and Company packing house, a thriving industry here at the time. He retired from the business and again entered the hardware and implement business being carried on in a room just east of The Courier office. Mr. Pitman retired from active business about 12 years ago. Mr. Pitman lived to see many changes in New Castle and often remarked that there was no one living here now who was above the age of 20 years when he first came to New Castle. Mr. Pitman was an ardent Republican and many years ago served as deputy sheriff and later as township trustee. He is survived by his widow and six children: Mrs. O. J. Holloway of this city, Frank Pitman of Chabron, NB, George Pitman of Waco, TX, Harry Pitman of Boerne, TX and Charles & Eli Pitman both of Logansport. He is also survived by six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a brother, Lee Pitman, of Cambridge City.
