!MILITARY: Judy Riffel, "The 1797 Mission of LA LUISIANA," in LE RACONTEUR; 1797; vol. XVII, nos. 3 & 4 (Dec 1997); p. 134; own copy. Josef TERIEAUX, who entered service on 9 Apr 1797, is listed on the Muster rolls of His Majesty's frigate LA LUISIANA, found in Archivo General de Indias, Papeles Procedente de Cuba, Legajo 542, pp. 318-421, microfilm copy at Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collection, Louisiana State University's Hill Memorial Library. There are other Acadians listed among these "Sailors at 15 pesos." [Could it have been this Joseph, married less than six weeks?]

!LAND: Listed in: Federal Land Grants in the Territory of Orleans--The Delta Parishes, are land grants in the former county of Acadia, comprising the present parishes of St. James and Ascension, and on the east side of the Mississippi River. Recorded around 1812, Joseph THERIOT has No. 152-272, "comprising 2 arpents 6 toises front [over 400 feet] by a depth of 40 arpents [almost a mile and a half] bounded upstream by Mr. OUVRE and downstream by Andre BERNARD. Part of a tract of 4 arpents 12 toises front surveyed in 1782 for Maurice FONTENAU and granted him in the same year, claimant holding title from judicial sale." The next place downstream was part of a tract purchased from the estate of Jean THERIOT who purchased from the estate of Maurice FONTENAU (deceased). Other THERIOTS also own pieces along the River. Joseph TERRIOT is listed in the presumed 1810 tax list of landowners and slaveowners of the Attakapas (original in the LSU Archives, reprinted in the Attakapas Gazette, vol. 11, no. 2 (summer 1976), p. 89. Here he has frontage of "3", and 1 slave, estimated value 350.
