Joseph Stauffer was born on 26 April 1819 in Altkirch, 68130, Haut Rhin, France. This birth date is supported by French civil birth records. His tombstone incorrectly lists his birth date as 31 March 1821. He was a farmer. He married Anna Schantz probably in Mullhausen, France. Joseph and Anna are said to have emigrated to the United States in 1855. Joseph died on 9 January 1892 in Tiskilwa, Illinois. Joseph and Anna are buried at Willow Springs Cemetery in Tiskilwa.

Joseph Stauffer was Mennonite. He may be the son of Jacob Stauffer and Anna Marie Lehman. He had a dairy business and lived in Mullhausen, France. He emigrated to US in 1855. per obit died age 72 yrs 8 m. 9 d. Per obit. had 16 children, 10 surviving and 40 grandchildren. Landed in NYC on June 1, 1855. First lived in Davis County and Henry County in Iowa. Then moved to Bureau County, Illinois. The family eventually lived on the Joseph Schertz farm in Tiskilwa. Probably is the Stauffer family that came from port of LeHavre on the ship Switzerland which arr NY June 7, 1855. This family says they are from Switzerland. This may be an error or may be reference to the fact that Mennonites emigrated from Switzerland to France.

The family was not found in 1851 Mullhausen census.

The birth date is based on info of Jean Lorentz which comes from the French civil birth record. Date on tombstone is wrong per civil birth record.
