According to Vera Reese Tranter (gg.daughter of Benjamin Reese), Joseph is a step-son of John because Joseph was not mentioned in John’s will. She also references the Maxwell History and Genealogy, but that information should be treated with caution (see John Tilford, 2nd husband of Catherine Reese). As well, Vera Tranter's research records indicate that she was aware of Jane Wetherell Weach's son, but chose not to mention him in her DAR Application because it would weaken her argument that Joseph was a step-son of John Reese, rather than a son.
In contrast, Alexander William Reese, a son of John Reese (Jr.), says Joseph is the oldest son of John and Jane Reese. Since Joseph was born shortly after John Reese and Jane Wetherell were married, and much too late to be the son of Jane's first husband, there is no reason to believe that Joseph is not John's son.
Probably came to Indiana in 1807 with father and Rev. Vawter
