Joseph Hawley (1603–1690), may have been born in Parwich, Derbyshire, England, was the first of the Hawley name to come to America in 1629. He settled at Stratford, Connecticut by 1650, becoming the town's first town clerk or record keeper, tavern (ordinary) keeper and a shipbuilder.

    Joseph1 Hawley, born in England, about 1603, died in Stratford, Conn., 20 May 1690. … This (date of birth) seems erroneous. His first child of record was b. 9 Jan. 1649-50. and his son older than this child was b. about 1647-48. This would date his marriage as about 1645. and if he were b. in 1603, he would be at least 42 when he was m. While this is possible, it is improbable. Unless some family tradition has come down 3 centuries stating that he was b. in Parwich, in 1603 (since the registers of Parwich do not begin until 1630), it is difficult to see how this has become established. His will shows that he owned land in Parwich, but he may not have been b. there. … Joseph Hawley is said to have come from Parwich, Derbyshire, arriving in Boston, about 1629, according to statements by various authors. It is not clear how this is known and as there was apparently but one settler in Boston before 1630, it seems possible that this also is an unsubstantiated tradition. He appeared in Stratford before 1649, when his first [recorded] child was apparently born there.
