[edit] OverviewJoseph Barron was born in Talbot County, Maryland, probably about 1723. He first married Hannah Evans in 1740, who probably died in childbirth in 1747. Whether their were any previous children to this marriage is unknown. The next year Joseph remarried, this time to Ann Walker, by whom he had numerous children. His earliest children are assigned Maryland POB's by most genealogists, with his later children being given POB's in Montgomery County, VA. A few of the intermediate children are given Rowan County, NC POB's. If taken literally, these data suggest that he moved from Maryland's Eastern Shore sometime in the 1750's to Rowan County, and then, sometime in the 1760's, moved back to Virginia settling in the New River settlements. At least one of his children is said to have been born in South Carolina, but supporting evidence for that is not available, and otherwise seems unlikely. In anycase, by 1774 he appears in the New River Valley when he, and two adult sons, served in Captain Herberts Company during Dunmore's War. Later, probably after the end of the Revolution, Herbert moved his family to Washington County, TN, dying on West Sinking Creek in 1793. [edit] NotesSome genealogists identify this Joseph Barron as "Joseph Elias Barron". Middle names were not in common use in the United States prior to about 1760. The insertion of "elias" as a middle name, while possible, seems unlikely. Original documentation examined specific to this family, including Joseph's will of 1793, consistently uses the name "Joseph Barron". This suggests that a confusion has crept in, perhaps reflecting the merger of data from two separate persons, a Joseph Walker and an Elias or Ellis Walker. In point of fact, some lineages do not point to a John Walker of Talbot County Maryland as Joseph's father, but to an Ellis Walker of New England. If this is the case, then the data previously supplied on WeRelate for Joseph's children may also reflect a merger of data from Ellis Walker of New England.
From Kegley, Vol 1:148---in September of 1777 Joseph Barron Sr., John Barran, Henry Barran, and William Barren took the oath of allegiance in John Montgomery's Company, Montgomery County. At the same time James and Samuel Walker took the Oath of Allegiance in McCorkle's Company, also in Montgomery County. From Kegley Vol 2:244---John, Joseph and Frederick Baron (Beason?, Bearon?) are listed as heirs in the 1804 estate settlement of Henry Trollinger. Trollinger had settled just East of Dublin in modern Pulaski County within the New River Valley, near the Pulaski Montgomery border. If the last name is in fact "Barron" then perhaps John, Joseph and Frederick are sons of Joseph Barron and Ann Walker, perhaps related by marriage to Trollinger. From Kegley Vol 2:339---James and Samuel Walker appear on the tithables list of Botetourt County in 1772. Kegley describes the list as for "Back Creek area". Back Creek lies in modern Pulaski County, and runs from the Foothills of Cloyds Mountain, north of Dublin, eastward discharging into the New River a mile or so north of the Radford Ammunition plant.
