His obituary in The Republican Standard, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, January 20, 1899.
John W. Slates, a prominent and highly respected Harrison County citizen, departed this life January 8, in his seventy-ninth year. In 1839 he was married to Susanna Hibbs, who preceded him to the other world several years ago. Their union was blessed with thirteen children, of which number nine survive him: Mrs. Eliza Ann Shaw, Perry Township; Mrs. Mercia Snyder, of Harrison County; Mrs. Letta Smith and Mrs. Susanna Hoobler, of Germano; Clark, of Loudon Township; Eli, of Harrison County; Albert, of Missouri; William, of Illinois; John R., of Carrollton,
Grandfather Slates was strictly temperate in his habits, industrious and economical, and by rigid honesty had endeared himself to a large circle of friends. For a period of over sixty years he was a member of the Lutheran Church. He was a man of strong faith, knew in whom he believed, hence he had no fear of death. When first stricken with paralysis he told his friends, and especially his daughter, Mrs. Smith, he would not recover but that it was well with his soul. He had his full share of trials, but he was patient in tribulation and calmly waited the time of his departure. His end was peaceful. His remains were taken to Kilgore and buried beside those of his loving and faithful wife. Rev. Cook, of Jewett, conducted the services. Grandfather Slates will be kindly remembered. "He rests from his labors and his works do follow him."
