ISSUES WITH THIS PROFILE
Tangled Genealogical Roots between the Mitchell’s of Augusta Co., VA and Bedford Co. VA. There were two distinct and different John Mitchell's living concurrently in early Augusta Co. VA. for at least 20 years in Augusta Co. VA. Neither were the parents of the Robert Mitchell, Daniel Mitchell, or James Mitchell of Bedford Co. VA. These were three distinct and different Mitchell families who appear to have shared sons named Robert & James, but not Daniel Mitchell or Agness Mitchell.
ONE - The 1771 Augusta VA will (probated 20 Aug 1771) of John Mitchell names his wife as Elizabeth and his children as 1) Thomas Mitchell 2) Eleanor Mitchell 3) Mary Mitchell 4) Robert Mitchell 5) John Mitchell 6) James Mitchell and 7) Elizabeth Mitchell. The wording in the 1771 will suggests the last three children were by his wife Elizabeth, and the first four children were by an earlier wife. This list of children’s given names matches the sequential birth order as children of John and Mary (Boyd) Mitchell listed in most trees, with the exception of William Mitchell. TWO - The 1771 Augusta VA. will of John Mitchell DOES NOT reference Daniel Mitchel 1718-1775 of Bedford Co. VA, brother of the Robert Mitchell 1714-1799 of Bedford Co., VA. But Daniel Mitchell’s June 1775 Bedford Co., VA. will probated in October 1775 Bedford VA made his brother Robert Mitchell one of the Executors of his estate. So Daniel Mitchell of Bedford Co. VA was still alive when the John Mitchell who died in 1771 Augusta Co. VA wrote his will.
THREE - NOR does the 1771 Augusta VA will of John Mitchell reference William Mitchell. William Mitchell is referenced as the son of John Mitchell and wife Margret in a 1752 Augusta VA deed. A 1783 Augusta VA Court record names William Mitchell as heir at large of John Mitchell age 96 whose 1783 Augusta VA will, did not name a wife, named grandchildren by two unnamed daughters, and did not name an Executor. This is 12 years after the John Mitchell who died in 1771 died. 1783 minus 96 years of age place this John Mitchell as born abt. 1687. FOUR - Robert Mitchell, Daniel Mitchell & James Mitchell of Bedford Co. VA appear concurrently in the county records with Robert Mitchell & James Mitchell of Augusta Co. VA, children of John Mitchell1782-xxx in this profile. 1775 Deeds for Robert Mitchell 1734-1810 in Augusta Co. VA name his wife as Elizabeth (Glass). Concurrent with deeds for James Mitchell 1740-1806 in Augusta Co. VA name his wife as Elizabeth (Beard). While Robert Mitchell 1714-1799 of Bedford Co. VA married Mary Enos, His brothers Daniel Mitchell 1708-1775 married Judith Prewitt and James Mitchell 1709-1775 married Margaret Caldwell.
FIVE - The web page “How I Solved It: Why John and Mary (Boyd) Mitchell Are Not the Parents of Robert Mitchell 1714-1799 shows that his Robert Mitchell’s father was another Robert Mitchell 1670-1750 who married Mary Innes 1669-xxxx. Robert Mitchell 1714-1799 married Mary Enos 1718-1800

The 1916 book "Kentucky Genealogy and Biography" Vol. 5, p. 209 edited by Thomas Westerfield has a biography of Thomas Mitchell b. 16 June 1768 Rockbridge Co., VA. Thomas was the son of John Mitchell and Margaret Porter. John Mitchell was the son of John Mitchell and Mary Boyd. The book states "John Mitchell and Mary Boyd immigrated from Ireland when their two children were very young. They appeared in Lancaster Co., PA in 1721. They lived there until 1737 when they moved over to the Virginia frontier to the area known as Augusta Co., VA. The area in Virginia later became Rockbridge County. In 1744 John, Jr. with his father's money selected a tract of land south of the Borden Grant for his father. The grant was for 400 acres being as stated in the patent, on a Branch of the James River called Broad Spring Branch."
