Buffalo's Post Office was established on May 18, 1907, about 5 months before statehood! Brule, located about 3/4 of a mile north of present downtown Buffalo was
established on September 16, 1893! Buffalo was nicknamed the "Stone City" because no buildings were permitted in the business district.
Buffalo is located on the old Fort Dodge - Fort Supply Military trail. The Great Western Cattle Trail also runs near Buffalo.

Arminta and John lived in Aurora Springs, MO, Saline Co. MO, Pettis Co. MO
(Flat Rock Twp 1880 census), Ponca City OK, Beaver Co. OK. After Arminta died,
of TB, John left claim in Beaver Co OK [Clarence W Hickman unable to find a claim,
maybe John never proved it up] and went to Alva, Woods Co, OK. John sold the
OK claim for $400 + team [= ca $600] summer of 1907. Dad filed a contest on
the land after John left.

John was a fiddler who played at square dances. Drank, had alcohol troubles. Phone
conversation with Ethyl W Hickman 29 Nov 1993. I didn't know about fiddling,
but Dad wanted all of us boys to be violinists, and once he mentioned in an
oblique way, that John Wesley had a drinking problem. I know that Dad was
adamant against alcohol.

Clarence W Hickman letter to me 23 Apr 1994 "...we went to the Cline
cemetery.[Arminta's grave site]. If my guess is right, John Hickman's claim
was at the intersection four miles south of Gate, OK, where you turn east to go
to the cemetery. If so, I think I can see why he might have abandoned the
claim. The intersection is just south of the Beaver River, and at least the
parts we could see of the four quarter-sections at the intersection were
forlorn to say the least. None that we could see looked tillable -- small, but
very steep sandhills with sagebrush on most of the land, some flat land on one
quarter with water standing on much of it (apparently just from the underground
water), and a generally desolate looking are. The cemetery itself is a
desolate looking place. The enclosed photo doesn't really show how desolate it
seemed. We did check out the markers in the cemetery in the hopes that Wayne
Lewis (who did the cemetery research that I sent earlier) had overlooked
Arminta's marker, but of course he hadn't"

Ethel Hickman Jacklich phone call 3 Apr 2000: Ethel's father Clarence said they didn't have anything to eat. He said that one reason he left home was because there would be one less mouth to feed. [Dad liked sorghum and hominy. We tend to like what we grew up with. sorhum and hominy are "poor folks" food].

[I don't have the date for this email, but it was around August 1999]
"When I spoke with my aunt, I had always wondered why my mother never talked about her childhood, and suspected it was alcoholism. She confirmed that my grandfather ,. C.W. [Charles Wilburn Hickman] was an alcoholic, and didn't get cleaned up until around 1957, when he started attending AA. She also mentioned that what she remembered of John Wesley was that while he was a very old man, he still would play the fiddle at the square dances in Hutchinson, and during the day, he would go around and collect bottles, usually with a "full" bottle to nip at. Of course, this was right after the Depression, so maybe there was no work around".
A fiddler who played at square dances. Drank, had alcohol troubles. Phone conversation with Ethyl W Hickman 29 Nov 1993
[Alcoholism plagued John Wesley Hickman and some others of the Hickman clan.]
- ↑ Howard,
My aunt mentioned that my great-uncle Fred [Fred Wyman] (Bud's wife's brother) and John Wesley [Hickman used to play the fiddle together almost every night they could. In fact, my uncle Jim (James Hickman, Bud's son) supposedly has John Wesley's fiddle.
