Howard,
The GED file came through just fine! Thank you!
I just got a chance this week to go through the file, and it looks like we are cousins. I was talking to my aunt Mary Lou, Bud's oldest daughter, and she remembers going to John Wesley's funeral in 1937. She remembered much more about Hattie Simpson's first husband (the Crane family) and their family then she did the Hickmans. She said that Bud didn't really mention his family too much, and she always thought that was strange. Do you know why that is?[I learned that he had alcoholism HMH]
Where are you located? Do you have an address? Although Mary Lou isn't on the Internet, I'm sure she'd love to write and ask a bunch of questions.
Thanks again!

Howard,
When I spoke with my aunt, I had always wondered why my mother never talked about her childhood, and suspected it was alcoholism. She confirmed that my grandfather, C.W., was an alcoholic, and didn't get cleaned up until around 1957, when he started attending AA. She also mentioned that what she remembered of John Wesley was that while he was a very old man, he still would play the fiddle at the square dances in Hutchinson, and during the day, he would go around and collect bottles, usually with a "full" bottle to nip at. Of course, this was right after the Depression, so maybe there was no work around.
It's funny you mention fights between Baptists and Methodists. My mom was raised (and remains) a Baptist, but my father and his family were Methodist. I was raised in the Baptist church, so I guess Mom won. <grin>
>From what I hear, Hattie Simpson was quite a gal. She had married Crane when she was 18 or 19, and he was in his 50s. She packed both he and her father up during the land rush, and drove the wagon from IL down to OK to start a new life. They had quite a few children together, and about a year or so after he died, she married John Wesley, who was also much older, and had my grandfather and his brother, who died at birth.
My aunt and mom both mentioned that they can remember an "Uncle Charlie" who sent them pecans for Christmas every year. It could be John Wesley's brother Charles H.., although I don't know when he died.
I'm going down to my aunt's sometime soon, and will have to talk more about the Hickman family. I'll let you know what more I find out.
