According to Clarence William Hickman, Clarence Theodore Hickman tried to get employment in the ship yards during WWII. He was turned down because he was too old. He colored his hair and lied about his age, then he went for a job. He got it. [But, 1995, he is not listed in the Soc Security records at the LDS]

A letter from Grace Hickman Wilson dated 18 Oct 1955 says that Clarence was confined to his bed for a week before he died, but that he had not been well for four five years prior to his death [I have copy of the letter. Clarence William Hickman has the original at his home in Topeka]

Ethel said that her mother told her that the hotel that she was living started to shake and everyone got out. she looked back and saw the hotel settling in a hole. Everyone went to Telegraph Hill because it was the highest spot and it was above the smoke and dust. peacefully Sunday evening letter follows. 1955 Oct 3 AM 11 02 [Original at CWH home. Clarence lived in Sacramento in 1937. Obituary of John Wesley Hickman, 9 Mar 1937, Hutchinson Kansas Herald.

Clarence told several stories about going west. He said he road the rails. There seems to have been some sort of trouble at home, but Ethyl W. Hickman doesn't know what. Phone conversation with Ethyl W. Hickman 25 Oct 1996; phone 11 Sep 1997 Clarence left home when he was fifteen. He was tired of poverty, consumption, bad family life. == Ethel Hickman Jacklich phone conversation with me 14 Dec 1996 Wilhelmina was named after the Queen of the Netherlands. She was rather regal, but was put down somewhat by her husband, Clarence. She was Lutheran. Clarence was anti-religion. When Grace was a baby, Wilhelmina got the children dressed up and took them to a large Lutheran church to be baptised. Clarence said he did not want that so and so to be the God-father. He gathered the family up and left the church. Ethel said the rest of the family was so embarassed. She says that may be why Grace was cremated. When Ethel announced that she was going to marry a Catholic, Clarence said that no one who married a Catholic would be his child. [I'm not certain that the last sentence· is quite right, but it reflects the comments Ethel made].

When Clarence died, they buried him Episcopalian. Ethel does not know why. Maybe, her mother made the arrangements. The family lived like monks. [She talked about the family, but I could got get everything down. I get the feeling that the family was not "a happy family"].

Clarence left home when he was fifteen. He rode the rails. He spent some time in Nevada before he got to California. Apparently he was gambling, doing odd jobs, etc, but Ethel is not certain.

[Clarence's brother Minor attended school at Carmean District School in Elmwood Twp, Saline Co Mo through 1st to 7th grades. (approx 1892 - 1899). Also, the 1900 MO, Saline Co, Elmwood Twp census shows Hickman, John Wesley, Arminta wife, Minor son, Mabel daughter, and Lucy daughter. These data suggest that Clarence left home while the family was still in MO.]

Ethel phone call 3 Apr 2000, Clarence met Wilhelmina through her brother Uncle Jack (John Soderlund).Jack lived in San Francisco. Clarence was working on a construction job when he met Jack. Wilhelmina was a dressmaker working in downtown SanFrancisco. Wilhelmina lived in a hotel. One Sunday he met her at lunch.
