Ethel Hickman Jacklich phone conversation with me 14 Dec 1996
Wilhelmina was named after the Queen of the Netherlands. She was rather regal, but was put down somewhat by her husband, Clarence. She was Lutheran. Clarence was anti-religion. Whe Grace was a baby, Wilhelmina got the children dressed up and took them to a large Lutheran church to be baptised. Clarence said he did not want that so and so to be the God-father. He gathered the family up and left the church. Ethel said the rest of the family was so embarassed. She says that maybe why Grace was cremated. When Ethel announced that she was going to marry a Catholic, Clarence said that no one who
married a Catholic would be his child. [I'm not certain that the last sentence·
is quite right, but it reflects the comments Ethel made]._
Clarence met Wilhelmina through her brother Uncle Jack (John Soderlund). Clarence was working on a construction job when he met Jack. Wilhelmina was a seamstress working downtown (SanFrancisco?). One Sunday he met her at lunch.
