Said to have been a handsome man with a quick wit and good humor. A proud and successful man. In 1880, at the age of 19, he was living with his uncle Abraham Helferich and family in Trenton, Mich., while attending school. John and Isabelle lived in Columbiaville, Mich. after their marriage. John was agent for the Mich. Central Railroad for over 40 years. During that time, he taught telegraphy to his nephew, Harry Helferich.
