John HAMILTON was born 16jun1754 and christened 28jun1654 at Glasgow (IGI). John HAMILTON was born 16jun1754 and died 6oct1829 at Northpark and was buried in Glasgow Cathedral. John married 21feb1780 Helen BOGLE, daughter of Archibald Bogle, Glasgow merchant; Archibald was son of Robert Bogle of Shettleston. John became Provost of Glasgow ("Provosts of Glasgow from 1609 to 1832"). Archibald was Archibald Baile Bogle, son of Robert Baile Bogle (1691-1736) and Agnes Stewart. Helen Bogle (4jan1758-1825) (R. Kelly). John HAMILTON was born 16jun1754 and died 6oct1829 at Northpark and was buried in Glasgow Cathedral. John married 21feb1780 Helen BOGLE, daughter of Archibald Bogle ("Provosts of Glasgow from 1609 to 1832"). Helen died at Northpark 7sep1825. John and Helen had 8 sons and 4 daughters; 3 sons and 1 daughter died young ("Provosts"). John matriculated at Glasgow University 1766 and was admitted a burgess 27mar1783. He bought the small estate of Northpark, which was just behind what is now (1942) Buckingham Terrace, Gt. Western Rd. John was a West India and wine merchant, and was known locally as “Johnny Sma’ Bottles”. In 1787 his firm was John Hamilton and Co., rum merchant, cellar - Leeche’s Close, south side of Trongate (Glasgow Directory) ("Provosts"). Scottish archives have the will of John Hamilton, esq., of Northpark near Glasgow, spouse of deceased Helen Bogle (scotlandspeople). John Hamilton of Northpark, born 1754, died 1829, three times Provost of Glasgow, was a wine merchant. Latterly, he and his son Archibald were in partnership, under the firm of John Hamilton and Son with their office at 78 Trongate. Mr. Hamilton's residence was the southmost house on the east side of St. Enoch Square. It may have been owing to this circumstance, or to the circumstance of his having been Provost, or perhaps to other causes, that irreverent persons pretended to identify him with Provost Shortridge in "Cyril Thornton" who gave the famous dinner. The Provost married Helen, daughter of Archibald Bogle, a younger son of Robert Bogle of Shettleston. This was doubling the strain of Bogle blood, for his own mother was Mary Bogle of Hamilton Farm. He had a large family by his wife. Among his children were George William, Merchant in Jamaica, the original of the immortal Aaron Ban in "Tom Cringle's Log", William of Northpark, Provost in 1826, and Archibald of Woodside, father of George William Hamilton, now head of the family, and of Helen Bogle, wife of Colin Dunlop Donald (probably from "Board of green cloth" stirnet). A photo of the portrait of John Hamilton of Northpark (1754 Glasgow-1829 Glasgow) painted by Sir Henry Raeburn was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition 1894 by Archibald Hamilton Donald (Exhibition catalogue). John Hamilton of Northpark, son of Rev. John Hamilton, D.D., of the High Church, became Provost of Glasgow; one son, William Hamilton of Northpark, became Provost, a daughter, Mary, married Rev. Dr. Welsh (catalogue). References
