John HAMILTON (1st) (d. 1674) was ordained 16may1650 and admitted to the parish of Carmichael, Lanarkshire. John married Helen FERGUSON, daughter of Ferguson of Caitloch, Moniaive ("Provosts of Glasgow from 1609 to 1832"). John and Helen had a child: M John HAMILTON (2nd) (d. 1741) was minister of Strathaven parish, and, from 1712 to 1741, of Blackfriars Church, Glasgow ("Provosts"). John married Margaret BALLANTINE (information from R. Kelly). A portrait of Rev. John Hamilton, D.D., (abt 1670-1741) was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition 1894 by Rev. Henry M. Hamilton. John was minister of College Church, Glasgow, vice chancellor of the University in 1727; he married Margaret, daughter of William Ballantine of Castlehill (Exhibition catalogue). John HAMILTON (2nd) (d. 1741) and Margaret BALLANTINE had a son: M John HAMILTON (3rd) (d. 1780) was ordained 1737 to the charge of the Barony parish, Glasgow, and 1749 transferred to the High Kirk; he was buried in Glasgow Cathedral. John was christened 8sep1713 at Glasgow (Latter Day Saints). John married Mary BOGLE, daughter of John Bogle of Hamilton Farm ("Provosts of Glasgow from 1609 to 1832"). John Hamilton (1713-1780) married Mary Bogle (12nov1727-26jul1808), daughter of John Bogle of Hamilton Farm (1679-1752) and Janet Miller (daughter of Matthew Miller of Glenlee). Mary Bogle’s sisters were Margaret Bogle (25feb1715-4apr1794) who married John Murdoch (4oct1709-30jun1776 ("Provosts"), and Martha Bogle (28may1719-1768), who married Colin Dunlop (1706-1777), (information from R.
