According to a descendant of Frederick August Frobose, John and Frederick were founding members of the Avondale Fire Department. Frederick cared for the fire department horses while their brother Phillip tended to Annie Oakley's horses. {Froboese Family website, http://mitglied.lycos.de/froboesefamily} In the Baldwin's Directory of Essex New Jersey for 1894, there is John A. Frobose, John A, living at Passaic Ave @ corner Franklin; working for Franklin, Nutley, Bellville and Newark Express. {<www.heritagequest.com>} In the 1900 Census for Franklin [later Nutley], Essex Co., New Jersey, John A. "Frobosr" is an 'expressman', born Dec 1867 in New York, married 12 years. His wife Mary L. is 38, born June 1861 in Ireland, emigrated about 1880(?), with 5 of 5 children living. Their children are Frederick, May 1891 NY; Nellie Jan 1893, NY; Mary I. Apr 1894 ; Elizabeth, Aug 1897 [sic] ; John A. Nov 1897 -- all born New Jersey-- also Michael Lucey, brother-in-law, 45 [sic] born Sept 1884 in Ireland, 'driver ex'; and John Lucey, age 18 born May 1882 Ireland 'laborer', emigrated 1889 & 1897 respectively. {Franklin, ED 194, sh. 7} In the 1910 census for Nutley, ward 3, John A. Frobose [indexed as 'Fotos' and 'Trobss'] is 42 born New York (parents Germany), 'expressman', married once for 22 years; wife Mary L. is 48 from Ireland (parents same), emigrated 1881, with 5 of 6 children living; children are Frederick M. 19, 'driver - express wagon'; Nellie L. 17; M. Florence 16; Bessie M. 13; and John A. Jr. 11 -- all born New Jersey. {ed 203, sh 5a, p. 249, roll 881 HeritageQuest} In the 1920 census for Nutley, ward 3, John A. 'Irobuse' is 54, widowed, born New York (parents Germany), an 'expressman'. His son Fred is 27, born New Jersey, 'exp. delivery'; his daughter Ellen is 25, single; his daughter Florence (Specer?) is widowed, age 23; daughter Elizabeth 'Trobuse' is 22, a teacher; and son John A. Jr. is 21, expressman -- all born in New Jersey, father New York, mother Ireland. {ed 296, sh 5b} In 1930, John A. Frobose is living at Chestnut Street/Passaic Ave, #115 in Nutley. He is 59, married first at 20, working as a 'general expressman' and owns a house worth $8,000. His daughter Elizabeth is 28, working as a teacher in a public school.
