John Vincent Cassanet was born on 21st October 1804 and baptised the following month in the parish of Bethnal Green in Middlesex, in the eastern suburbs of London. He was the son of Ann Cassanet, formerly Dean, and her husband Peter Vincent Cassanet, a linguist and teacher of mathematics, who was a Frenchman who had moved to England around the time of the French Revolution. He was reputedly from a wealthy or possibly noble family in France prior to the revolution. However, whilst John was young it seems likely that the family would have lived modestly in Bethnal Green.
John was married on 8th February 1826, aged 21, to Mary Brown Usher in Hackney, just north of Bethnal Green. After their marriage they returned to Bethnal Green, where they had two daughters: Frances Ann in 1827 and Mary Frederica in 1830.
John's mother died in 1837.
The 1841 census finds John, Mary and their daughter Frances (Fanny) living on Prospect Place in Hackney, with John working as a clerk. Their other daughter, Mary, seems to have been living at Odiham in Hampshire.
John's wife Mary died in 1846 in St George in the East, aged 44. Two years later, John's father died.
The 1851 census finds John staying at the Unicorn Inn in Melksham, Wiltshire, described as a concert traveller. He gave his place of birth as Odiham, where his daughter had been living ten years previously.
John returned to the London area, marrying again on 11th August 1852 to a widow called Catherine Bayley Hollinsworth, formerly Weatherhead. They married at Newington in Surrey, in the southern suburbs of London.
John and Catherine were only married for just over a year before Catherine died, aged 47. She was buried on 12th December 1853 in Lambeth.
The 1861 census finds John living with his daughter Fanny and her husband at 55 Wardour Street in the parish of St Anne Soho in the Liberty of Westminster to the west of London. John was working as an advertising agent.
A couple of months after the 1861 census, John married for a third time. His third wife was Emily Birch, who was nearly 35 years his junior, and younger than John's children from his first marriage. John and Emily married on 27th June 1861 at the church of St Andrew Holborn in the City of London.
John and Emily went on to have four children together between 1865 and 1872, although their eldest son died when he was only four years old. There was a gap of about 45 years between the births of John's first and last children.
The 1871 census finds John, Emily, and their children living at 15 Craven Buildings in the parish of St Clement Danes in the Liberty of Westminster. John was still working as an advertising agent, whilst Emily was described as a machinist.
By 1881 the family had moved to 12 Warrior Road in Lambeth, in the southern suburbs of London.
John died in Lambeth in 1882, aged 77. Emily survived him by 17 years and remarried in 1888.

Although John was not from Odiham, it is where his daughter Mary was living in the 1841 census, suggesting he had some connection to it. No other plausible appearance for John has been found in the 1851 census, nor has any other sighting of this John Cassinet from Odiham been found, and they are therefore presumed to be the same man.
