Emily Birch was born on 17th July 1839 and baptised two months later in the parish of St Andrew Holborn, which was partly in the City of London and partly outside it in Middlesex. She was the daughter of Dinah Birch, formerly Limb, and her husband Henry Birch, a glass cutter. The 1841 census finds Emily living with her parents and siblings at Crown Court in the parish of St Sepulchre in Middlesex, immediately north-west of the City of London.
By 1851 Emily was working as as a servant for a bookseller at 1 Chapter House Court, near St Paul's Cathedral in the centre of London. The 1861 census finds Emily working as a needlewoman at 58 Castle Street East in Marylebone, in London's western suburbs.
On 27th June 1861, aged 21, Emily married John Vincent Cassanet, an advertising agent. He was nearly 35 years her senior, and a widower twice over. Emily had stepdaughters from John's first marriage who were older than her. Emily and John married at the church of St Andrew Holborn in London.
Emily and John went on to have four children together between 1865 and 1872, although their eldest son died when he was only four years old. The 1871 census finds Emily, John and their children living at 15 Craven Buildings in the parish of St Clement Danes in the Liberty of Westminster to the west of London. Emily was described as a machinist.
By 1881 the family had moved to 12 Warrior Road in Lambeth, in the southern suburbs of London. John died in Lambeth in 1882.
Six years later, Emily married again. Her second husband was Harry Waite, a photographer and insurance agent. They married at Emmanuel Church in Camberwell on 21st July 1888. The 1891 census finds them living at 34 Cambridge Street in the Newington area of south London along with two of Emily's children.
Emily died in late 1899 in the Southwark area, aged 60. Harry only survived her by a little while, dying early in 1900.
