Biography

John Lyford Bean is the son of Loammi Bean and Mehitable (Smith) Bean of Brentwood, New Hampshire. On September 21, 1825, John Lyford Bean married Mary Evans (1806-1870) the daughter of Thomas Evans and Deborah (Hall) Evans of Stafford, New Hampshire. In 1848, John and Mary moved from Brentwood to Derry, New Hampshire. John was a cooper by trade, but at Derry, he devoted himself to farming. His farm at Derry was located next to what was formerly called "Derry Dock," the place where they piled and stored masts for the King's Navy before the Revolutionary War. After the snows came in the winter, they could be dragged to Portsmouth for shipment. John was a devout Quaker, and a staunch Democrat in a Republican community. In his later years, John suffered from asthma. He lived with his son, James, who took over the Homestead. The eleven children of John and Mary are listed in his wife's profile. John is buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery, in East Derry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, Plot: Section M Lot 19
