There is speculation online (previously imported into this record) that Joanna was Joanna Borden, daughter of Matthew, and had traveled with her brother John on the Elizabeth and Ann in 1635. However, in 1976, Robert Charles Anderson published an article demonstrating that John Gay had married the widow of John Borden, and that Borden's daughter Elizabeth was the "Elizabeth Gay" who had married Richard Martin in Salem in 1660.

Joanna was identified in a 2010 article that identified the marriage and baptism records for her and her children with John Borden.
