I Remember Mama Mama was a romantic, a dreamer and a believer in the occult. She was so very strong, with wisdom and courage. I lived with her most of my life. She was kind and gentle and had a great sense of humor. She taught me kindness and manners, very important for her. Mama was a gypsy, we laughingly called her. We moved every time the wind changed, and she loved to go off on jaunts to Chicago to visit her sister Helen, or to Georgia to visit her sister Katie and niece Lutie. She had a "magic touch" – when I was sick, she would put her hand on my forehead –it always made me feel better; it was just the "touch". Mama nursed Papa by herself; he was completely bedridden for a year. I was there, but I worked and I wasn't much help. When he died, she fell apart. She was lost. So she visited her family in Marietta, Will Joe and Dixie and Lutie. She loved Georgia; you might say she pined for it. Every time I hear Ray Charles sing "Georgia on My Mind" I think they wrote it for her. Mama taught me all the handwork of the time: crocheting, embroidery, darning, etc. She also knew all the card games that were popular. Do I remember Mama? You bet, and I'll never forget her. —By Willa Burr Humpreys Hansen, daughter of Jefferson Davis and Katherine Louise Chewning Rogers
