About James Smalley, Jr.

Little is known of James Smalley, Jr. He is listed in the 1790 Census of Frederickstown, Putnam County, New York with 1 Free White male 16 years upwards and head of families, 3 Free White males under 16 years of age, 2 free white females and head of families. He is listed very near this father, James Smalley, his brother, Zachariah Smalley, Elisha Cole, Daniel Cole, John Cole, and several Hopkins, Barrett, Wixon and Townsend families. Since he apparently had 4 young children at the time of the 1790 census, one could surmise that James Smalley was most likely born between 1760-1770. It is unknown at this time when this James Smalley died, the name of his wife, or the names of his children. There is a James Smalley listed in the 1810 Census in Frederick, Putnam County, New York, but that James Smalley is apparently the James Smalley that married 1/Susannah Boyd, and 2/Phebe Wixon/Wixson, so one could surmise that this James Smalley may have died before 1810.

There is a Samuel Smalley that died intestate in Putnam County, New York in 1839 that MAY be a son of this James Smalley, but further evidence is needed to establish a connection.

Also, a Benjamin Smalley COULD be a son of this James:

James, I've seen some of your messages and I think you may be able to help. My hobby is doing genealogy research on the Smalley Family. For the past year or so, we have been doing a systematic review of the Smalley's in the US Census. Right now we are working on Dutchess and Putnam Counties, New York. We are able to identify most of them, of course, quite a few are just still unknowns to us. So I have lots of questions. Once you posted a message on Benjamin James Smalley as possibly being a son of James Jr. Any further information on him? I ran across a Berry and Hannah Smalley in Chemung County, NY with the same death date. I suspect it is not Berry, but Benny, and is just a tombstone name reading or typing error. The Chemung County and Schuyler County Smalley's seem to have a Dutchess Co connection. Of interest this Berry, I think Benny, and Hannah had a son named Nathan B. Smalley. There is also a Nathaniel and James Smalley in Chemung Co. I"m still wondering what happened to Isaiah Smalley Sr and Hannah Carle's son Nathan Bartholomew Smalley. I don't find him in the Dutchess/Putnam Counties Census. He may have just been missed on the indexes and on my review, or maybe he moved elsewhere. As an aside, but not really, I agree with you that Hannah Smalley, the 2nd wife of Elisha Cole, is probably the sister of James Smalley in Dutchess Co.
