Information on James Smalley

Little is known about this James Smalley. James Smalley was most likely born in Massachusetts (possibly Truro or Eastham, Massachusetts), and supposedly migrated to the Dutchess/Putnam County, New York area about 1745-6 with his family. It is possible that this James Smalley MAY be a brother (or related in someway) to Hannah Smalley, who was born bet 1720-1723. Hannah Smalley was the second wife of Elisha Cole II. According to "The Descendants of Elisha Cole", compiled by Joseph O. Curtis, 1909, Hannah Smalley and her family migrated from Massachusetts to Dutchess/Putnam County, New York around 1743-5. (This seems to mirror the story of James Smalley and his family, they may be one in the same family). The Smalley and Cole families appear to have been very close, with several marriages between the two families. James Smalley in his will, named Daniel Cole, esq. as a co-administrator of his will, this is likely Daniel Cole (1749-1834), son of Elisha Cole and Hannah Smalley. More research is necessary to establish the parentage of James Smalley, as well as the name of his wife, who is at this time unknown. According to a biography of James Smalley's son, Isaiah, this James Smalley lived to be at least 100 years old, although no concrete evidence (tombstone dates, court records, etc) have been found to establish this as fact.

UPDATE! - DNA Link to Edward Smalley

Smalley Family DNA site: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Smalley/

As of 2008, there is definitive proof through DNA analysis that James Smalley is a descendant of Edward Small (Smale, Smalley), who migrated to New England in the early 1600's. It is thought by some researchers that James Smalley's line is most likely through Edward's son Smalley's son, Francis Small (Smale, Smalley), and then through Edward's grandson Francis Smalley. who died in Truro Parish, Barnstable County, Massachusetts in abt. 1709. Since the family of James Smalley of Dutchess/Putnam County, New York supposedly came from either Truro or nearby Eastham, Massachusetts, it seems likely that Francis3 Smalley (Francis2, Edward1) is an excellent candidate for the probable grandfather of this James Smalley. Additional research is necessary to determine the parentage of this James Smalley, and through which son of Francis3 Smalley that he likely descends.
