Descendants of James Smalley, of Putnam County, New York

Generation No. 1

1. JAMES1 SMALLEY, OF PUTNAM COUNTY, NEW YORK was born WFT Est. 1719-1730 in prob. Massachusetts, and died 1823 in Kent, Putnam County, New York. He married UNKNOWN WFT Est. 1747-1753. She was born WFT Est. 1725-1740, and died Bef. 1819.

Notes for JAMES SMALLEY, OF PUTNAM COUNTY, NEW YORK: Little is known about this James Smalley. James Smalley was most likely born in Massachusetts (possibly Truro or Eastham, Massachusetts), and supposedly migrated to the Dutchess/Putnam County, New York area about 1745-6 with his family. It is possible that this James Smalley MAY be a brother (or related in someway) to Hannah Smalley, who was born bet 1720-1723. Hannah Smalley was the second wife of Elisha Cole II. According to "The Descendants of Elisha Cole", compiled by Joseph O. Curtis, 1909, Hannah Smalley and her family migrated from Massachusetts to Dutchess/Putnam County, New York around 1743-5. (This seems to mirror the story of James Smalley and his family, they may be one in the same family). The Smalley and Cole families appear to have been very close, with several marriages between the two families. James Smalley in his will, named a Daniel Cole, esq. as a co-administrator of his will, this could be Daniel Cole (1749-1834), son of Elisha Cole and Hannah Smalley. More research is necessary to establish the parentage of James Smalley, as well as the name of his wife, who is at this time unknown. According to a biography of James Smalley's son, Isaiah, this James Smalley lived to be at least 100 years old, although no concrete evidence (tombstone dates, court records, etc) have been found to establish this as fact.

UPDATE (May 2008) - recent DNA matching done on four descendants of Edward Smale / Small / Smalley has concluded that James Smalley of Putnam County, New York is positively a descendant of the immigrant, Edward Smale / Small / Smalley, through his son, Francis Smalley, who was married to Elizabeth Leighton. Here is a link to the description of the Smalley DNA project:

Following is a link to the results of the project. Participants are anonymous, and identified by a kit number. The first four participants, highlighted in green, are a match for each other, and are from different descendants of Edward Smale / Small / Smalley:

Would greatly appreciate any information tying into this family, including any additions or corrections. Please e-mail me at: Delijim@aol.com

Another Smalley in Putnam County, Samuel Smalley, who died in Putnam County about 1839, is perhaps a son/grandson of this James Smalley. Samuel died without a will about 1839. The following surviving heirs were listed in court papers entered into record on 1/16/1839: wife, Mary Smalley, daughters Melinda Smalley, Deborah Smalley, and sons Samuel Smalley, Squire Smalley, Zachariah Smalley, and an infant son now nameless (Cole's). Also from Surrogate's Minutes recorded in book 2, pages 74:

Guardianships of the children of Samuel and Mary Smalley of Kent: Deborah was 18 years of age on May 19, 1841. Samuel was 16 years of age on May 30, 1841. Square (Squire) was 12 years of age on April 15, 1841. Coles was 2 years of age on November 10, 1840. Need additional information.

I got your name from genforum, which I don't really know how to use; I noticed your correspondence with others on the Smalley Forum.

I am related to Isiah Smalley (1756-1856) by way of Lovisa Smalley -- spelling taken from her tombstone.

I'm wondering if you have any information you'd be willing to share regarding Isiah and his father, or Lovisa's brothers and sisters. Thanks for any help you can provide.

  • v. JAMES SMALLEY, JR., b. Abt. 1760, Prob. Dutchess/Putnam County, New York; d. Putnam County, New York; m. UNKNOWN SPOUSE, Abt. 1779.

Notes for JAMES SMALLEY, JR.: Little is known of James Smalley, Jr. He is listed in the 1790 Census of Frederickstown, Putnam County, New York with 1 Free White male 16 years upwards and head of families, 3 Free White males under 16 years of age, 2 free white females and head of families. He is listed very near this father, James Smalley, his brother, Zachariah Smalley, Elisha Cole, Daniel Cole, John Cole, and several Hopkins, Barrett, Wixon and Townsend families. Since he apparently had 4 young children at the time of the 1790 census, one could surmise that James Smalley was most likely born between 1760-1770. It is unknown at this time when this James Smalley died, the name of his wife, or the names of his children. There is a James Smalley listed in the 1810 Census in Frederick, Putnam County, New York, but that James Smalley is apparently the James Smalley that married 1/Susannah Boyd, and 2/Phebe Wixon/Wixson, so one could surmise that this James Smalley may have died before 1810.

There is a Samuel Smalley that died intestate in Putnam County, New York in 1839 that MAY be a son of this James Smalley, but further evidence is needed to establish a connection.

Also, a Benjamin Smalley COULD be a son of this James:

James, I've seen some of your messages and I think you may be able to help. My hobby is doing genealogy research on the Smalley Family. For the past year or so, we have been doing a systematic review of the Smalley's in the US Census. Right now we are working on Dutchess and Putnam Counties, New York. We are able to identify most of them, of course, quite a few are just still unknowns to us. So I have lots of questions. Once you posted a message on Benjamin James Smalley as possibly being a son of James Jr. Any further information on him? I ran across a Berry and Hannah Smalley in Chemung County, NY with the same death date. I suspect it is not Berry, but Benny, and is just a tombstone name reading or typing error. The Chemung County and Schuyler County Smalley's seem to have a Dutchess Co connection. Of interest this Berry, I think Benny, and Hannah had a son named Nathan B. Smalley. There is also a Nathaniel and James Smalley in Chemung Co. I"m still wondering what happened to Isaiah Smalley Sr and Hannah Carle's son Nathan Bartholomew Smalley. I don't find him in the Dutchess/Putnam Counties Census. He may have just been missed on the indexes and on my review, or maybe he moved elsewhere. As an aside, but not really, I agree with you that Hannah Smalley, the 2nd wife of Elisha Cole, is probably the sister of James Smalley in Dutchess Co.
