and where is Putnam County?

My ancestors go back to Martha Gerard from Bordeaux, France. She was born abt 1767, and had two brothers, Stephen and Jesse. They came to America in 1767. She married John Bruce, who later changed his name to John Seals.

Stephen established the Girard(Gerard) University in Philadelphia. He married Mary Lumm in 1778, daughter of the the Lum shipping business. Martha later married Benjamin Smalley.

My ancestor, Martha Gerard Seals later married Benjamin Smalley after her husband, John Seals, was killed by the Indians. She and Benjamin had one child, William. Benjamin and William were clearing land when the Indians attacked, killed Benjamin, and capture William. He was held for 12 years, and was restored to his people. He became an interpreter for the Indians, etc., etc.,

I'm from Texas, and there is a book called "Land of Good Waters" by Clara Stearns Scarborough. It has information about the Smalleys who were one of the first settlers in central Texas.

Also, a Benjamin Smalley, was in Putnam County, New York in 1800, and was treated by Dr. Elias Cornelius in 1800-1801 at the home of Joseph Hopkins. He may be related to this family. (source: New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 111, July 1980, pg. 104.)

Surname: Fenton, Hawkins, Smalley

Benjamin SMALLEY, b. abt 1778, m. Hannah HAWKINS, b. abt 1780, Dutchess Co., NY, probably in Yates Co., NY, after 1800. They had at least one child, Nathan B Felton, b. abt 1823, Steuben Co., NY. Hannah's parents were James (b. 1754) and Deborah HAWKINS of Fishkill Twp, Dutchess County. James' brother was David (b. 1757) and his wife was Hannah FELTON and they were of Frederickstown Twp, Dutchess County. The HAWKINS brothers moved to Starkey Twp, Yates County, NY, after 1800. Both were veterans of the Dutchess County Militia during the Revolutionary War and both were under arms at the hanging of Major Andre in Peepskill, NY. James, in his application for veteran benefits, relates a conversation that he had with General Washington. I have plenty on the Hawkins line but little on the in-laws. Would appreciate any contact.
