McCroskey, James - entered service 1780 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, where born 11/1/1760*, granted Pension 1832 in Scott County, Kentucky; died 10/25/1835; son William resided 1854 in Livingston County, Kentucky when he gave power of attorney to agent to apply for Pension. F-S11050, R1673.
- corrected from 11/1/1860, transcript has date as 1/1/1760. Prior to 1778, Rockbridge was part of [then] Augusta County, Virginia.

Pension application of James McCrosky S11050 f20VA

The declaration of James McCrosky in order to obtain a benefit of the Act of Congress of the 7th of June 1832 on the 20th day of August 1832 James McCrosky personally appeared before the Justices of the County Court of said County resident of said County and State of Kentucky aged 72 years last New Year's Day and being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress of 7th June 1832.
In the County of Rockbridge State of Virginia during the Revolutionary War he said James McCrosky was a Citizen & a resident of said County & State that in the year 1780 he cannot recollect the months, he said James served a militia Tour of three months – that he was in the company of James Gilmore under Colonel Howard & Major Giles, that he was marched to the South & was in the Battle of the Cowpen Plains [Cowpens?, January 17, 1781], he was under that part of the Army commanded by General Morgan [Daniel Morgan] – In the year 1781 he believes but his memory fails him he served another tour of 3 months under Captain Guilford – was marched to the South as before & was in the Battle of Girlford [Guilford, March 15, 1781] which will from the time he served the second Tour and his three months having expired he joined the infantry as Cadet under Captain Wallace & he cannot recollect his commanding officers of the Regiment & he served in this capacity until after the Siege of York & the taking of Cornwallis [October 19, 1781] – he was at the taking of Cornwallis and after guarding the Prisoners to the Manchester Barracks he was discharged – does not recollect whether he ever [word written over and indecipherable] a written discharge. If so he has lost it. He here sends a fragment of a discharge1 of the first Tour & some paper money as proof of the truth of his statement as far as will go & corroborate. The officers of the government will be able by this to ascertain how long he served as the dates are known of the great events which he has mentioned, viz. the Battle of Guilford & that of the surrender of Cornwallis, for the memory of said James is so frail that he cannot recollect the particular dates – and he further states that he hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or an annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of any Agency in any State.

In September 1780 James McCrosky marched from rock County Virginia to North Carolina commanded by Captain James Gilmore and joined a detachment Commanded by General Morgan and Major Giles was in the battle of the Cowpen Plains a tower of 3 months. Returned home and in a few days marched to North Carolina commanded by Captain Telford Joined Colonel Howard's Regiment was in the battle of Guilford Courthouse, then joined the regular Army a Cadet commanded by General Green [Nathanael Greene] and marched to Virginia was in the siege of Yorktown and in the Guard of the prisoners to Winchester barracks at the close of the war, the time of his services one year and about two months, six months in the militia, and eight months in the Regular Army as Cadet.
And said James McCrosky half presented a fractured Discharge for his service in the militia.
