Will Transcript
- In the name of God amen. I James Gamble of the parish and County Augusta being now under the Afflicting hand of God but perfect Mind and Memory thanks to Almighty God who gave it and Calling to mind the Uncertainty of life and the Certainty of death it being appointed for all Men Once to die I do hereby make my last will and Testament in Manner & form following and first I recommend My Soul to God who gave it and my body to the Earth whence it was taken to be Buried in a Christian decent like manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named not doubting but I shall receive it again at the Resurrection and as for such Worldly Estate it hath pleased God to bestow upon me it is my Will and desire that it be disposed of as follows and first it is my Will and desire that all my Just debts and funeral Charges be Duely [Duly] paid within Convenient time after my decease by my Executors adn to my well beloved wife Agness I leave and Bequeath Two horses and two Breeding Mares such as she shall Choose out of my Stock and six Cows and my hogs and sheep and all my household goods Except a Bed and Bed Cloths to Each of my daughters and my dwelling house and Barn and the land joining thereto as follows (Viz)
- Beginning at a large white Oak next to Alexander Blairs and thence to a white oak saplin[g] in the Old field and thence by the Peach trees to the field that was Alexander Craigs Senr. and along the said fence to the Outside line and thence towards the River untill it Comes Opposite to the Spring house that belonged to Alexr. Craig Junr. and up the said draft to John Youngs Corner Next to James Andersons adn half the Crop I likewise allow my Negroe Man named Harry to her while she remains my Widdow and as long and such other tools or Implements as may be Necessary for working the plantation and to my Well Beloved Son Robert I leave and Bequeath that part of my land that liyeth next to Alexander Blairs with that of Alexander Craigs Senr. and a survey Joining to it and that the Collects all the debts due to me by Bond and of which I allow to him two hundred pounds and the remainder to be put into the hands of my Executors for paying Legacy's I likewise leave and Bequeath unto him my Negroe Man Neptune and my Negroe Wench Doll with what horse Creatures are already named to him and my English Mare returning her first fole to my son John when One near old and to his heirs and Assigns forever and to my beloved son John I leave and Bequeath that part of my land Next to or on both sides of the Middle River together with that part mentioned to his Mother at her death and my Negroe Boy Adam and my Negroe Wench Rose & Negroe Menn and his Mare and Saddle and the stable on and four Cows and the plantation Tools that Remains after what is Necessary for my wife to keep I allow him one half and to his heirs and assigns forever the allowing the four first Children that Rose may have as follows the first to my daughter Sarah the second to Agness the third to Elizabeth the fourth to Esther when they are one year old and to be beloved daughter Sarah I leave and bequeath her mare & saddle a bed & Bed Clothes and two hundred pounds in Cash and to be beloved daughter Agnes I leave and bequeath my Trip mare and fole and of her Saddle and Bridle and a Bed and Bed Clothes and Two hundred pounds in Cash and to my beloved daughter Elizabeth I leave and Bequeath One mare and Saddle to the value of Twenty eight pounds and a Bed and Bed Clothes and two hundred pounds in Cash and Grattons Mares fole and to be beloved daughter Esther I leave and bequeath One Mare and saddle to the Value of Twenty Eight pounds and a Bed and Bed Clothes and two hundred pounds in Cash it is likewise my Will and desire that if any of my said Children should die in their Nonage that their part be Equally divided between those that survive it is likewise my Will and desire that what of my stock is not here Mentioned be sold to The best advantage and wheat my personal Estate Surmounts the Legacies here Mentioned to be Equally divide between my Two sons and if it happens to fall Short to be Equally deducted of the Legacies and I do hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my trusty and beloved friends Mr. John Page and my trusty and Beloved Brother Thomas Bell and my Beloved Son Robert Gamble Executors of this my last Will and Testament and I hereby revoke disaprove and disallow of all former and other Will or Wills heretofore made together by Word or Writing, Ratifying and approving of this only as my last Will and Testament.

- This last will and testament of James Gamble dec'd. was proved by the Oaths of the Witnesses thereto and Ordered to be Recorded and on the Motion of Robert Gamble one of the Executors therein named who made Oath according to Law Certificate for obtaining a probat in due form is granted him he having Complyed with Law.

- Page 166 - - 14th July, 1776. James Gamble's will - - To wife, Agness, tract vor. Alex Blair; corr. the land that was Alex. Craig, Sr.'s; the spring house that belonged to Alex. Blair, cor. Alex. Craig, Sr.; to son, John, land on both sides Middle River; to daughters, Sarah, Agness, Elizabeth, Esther. Executors, John Poage and beloved brother Thomas Bell and son Robert Gamble. Teste: James Bell, William Frame, William Young. Proved, 15th May, 1781, by the witnesses, and Robert Gamble qualifies.
- Page 183.--27th August, 1781. James Gamble's estate appraised agreeable to the rate of 1774, by William Young, James Trimble, Jno. Gardner.
