Facts and Events
James (Spens) BLACK born 1816 in Linlithgow, died aged 51 in feb1867 at Craigmaddie House, Baldernock, Stirlingshire,(ancestry.com submission). He died 6feb1867 at Craigmaddie (Gentlemen's Magazine 1867). He changed his name with approval by the Lord Lion King of Arms 5may1863 to James SPENS-BLACK (information from J. Tant). Scottish Archives have the will registered in 1867 of „James Spens BLACK of Craigmaddie“, mentioning his 2 wives. He married 1st 28feb1848 or 28feb1849 in Barony parish Mary LOAG (according to the will)/LOGUE (according to marriage and birth records) and 2nd Mary Jane Hattersley SANDS. From “Decennial indexes to the services of heirs in Scotland 1700-1859”: Reg. 12sep1850. James Spens Black, calico printer, Glasgow, to his father James Black, merchant there, heir gen. Craigmaddie House, Stirlingshire, was bought in the late 18th century by James Black, Lord Provost of Glasgow from 1808 to 1809, who married Hannah Shortridge. Later after several changes of ownership it was bought by James Spens BLACK, manufacturer, of the firm John Black & Co., Glasgow. One should not confuse the Lord Provost with „James Black & Co.“, calico printers (Glasgow people) and „John Black & Co.“, printers (Paisley people). In 1866 James Spens Black left the firm of John Black & Co., Allander Works, Milngavie (information from C. Spens Black). In “Rambles round Glasgow” the firm’s works are described as a calico printing and cotton spinning establishment. In 1861 James S. Black (b. 1816), Mary (b. 1827), Edith (b. 1853), Maxwell (b. 1854), Norman (b. 1855) and Arthur (b. 1857) were at Baldernock, Stirlingshire (census). James (Spens) Black had 5 daughters, according to his son Maxwell; Edith, Beatrice and Mabel lived in England (information from C. Black).
