Maxwell SPENS-BLACK was born 1oct1853 (IGI) and christened 23nov1853 (ancestry.com submission) in Baldernock, Stirlingshire, son of James Spens BLACK and Jane Hattersley. Maxwell SPENS-BLACK married 29apr1883 Marie Vivienne SHIELD in Timaru, New Zealand, according to the Timaru Herald. Marie was daughter of the late Ernest Macdonell, formerly Her Majesty’s Consul at Tunis and granddaughter of Count Armand de Sapinaud of Chateau La Barabinaire, Bastia, Corsica. Maxwell and Marie had a son, Maxwell, known as Max (who died after 1970 in New Zealand), and 2 daughters (C. Spens Black). Max senr. died 1922, aged 68 (C. Spens Black). According to Timaru Herald Maxwell and Marie had the following child: (female) BLACK was born 8apr1884 in Timaru, New Zealand. From C: Spens Black: Maxwell Spens Black (b.1853) knew and spoke highly of Harold Spens Black (1858), who visited NZ 1897-98 before emigrating to California.
